Tenants of the House is a skillful depiction of the ugly underbelly of Nigerian politics unveiling the intrigues, chicanery, and greed pervasive within the country’s political and legislative processes. The book is a fictionalized account of the author’s experiences while serving in the country’s House of Representatives. It portrays with gripping suspense a nation in dire need of moral rejuvenation.
Tenants of the House Wale Okediran 9780976694168 Books
The stench from Nigeria's legislative processes wafts pungently off the pages of "Tenants of the House", the "fictionalized" memoirs of Wale Okediran, erstwhile president of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). The author who spent a term as a member of the country's Federal House of Assembly between 2003 and 2007 surely must have given up his seat in shock and utter disgust at the horseplay and brazen looting of public funds that masquerade as "law-making" in Nigeria. Indeed the so called "honourables" are depicted as little more than a looting mob that have completely run amok in a feeding frenzy by the way the sharing of monies and improper financial inducements are prerequisites of all actions and deliberations of the "House". On the other hand the society at large comes across as one in which there's no moral compass and no sense of accountability whatsoever on the part of the agents of government, making complete nonsense of the nascent democracy of the country. The book is compelling reading for all those who wonder why Nigeria, with all its abundant human and mineral resources, remains an impoverished country with majority of her peoples wallowing in abject poverty. Clearly the country has and continues being robbed of its riches by a malignant coalition of kleptomaniacs within society that has a stranglehold on the reins of power.
